The slow season?

It’s summer – the off-season, the slow season or, as the Dutch say: ‘cucumber time’. But is the off-season really that off? At Piet Hein Eek, we see it as a challenge to turn the slow season into a positive period. While you are enjoying the summer holidays, we are working hard – as always. Which makes summer the perfect time to visit our workshop to see how our products are manufactured, or to come and marvel at our new designs or recently opened Wonderkamer (Wonderroom). Or what about visiting the exhibition of Gerd Rohling while it is still on?

By the time you read this, I will be lazing about in Mavaleix, France, where we have just completed building our holiday homes. Then again, I will probably be laying bricks, because being idle is not one of my strong points.

Marc Mulders was supposed to visit us in Mavaleix, but he could not bring himself to leave his own piece of paradise. The upside to this downside is that he can capture the whole summer and work on his exhibition which will be on display in our gallery from 21 September, extending the summer into the autumn and winter.

Before I forget the most important thing: we have a new chef, Martien Pruijmboom, who has developed a summer menu which serves as a fantastic crown on our achievements. Incidentally, his first amuse-bouche featured Japanese flavours and cucumber – an idea which proved to be ahead of its time.
