Design Miami/Basel June 14 -18 th

If there’s one thing I hate, it’s selling designs as if they were art. Not because some designs do not deserve the recognition, but because there are a lot of failures that fall within this category that are sold for a great deal of money under the guise of uniqueness. And this is exactly the area you find yourself in as a participant of Design Miami/Art Basel. So we’re not going there, you might think.

If you are then invited by Rossana Orlandi, our most important international contact (my Italian mother), it is impossible to refuse. So despite the hectic times we find ourselves in, an uncompromisingly ambitious plan has been made and practically the whole company has been mobilised to compile a presentation that should surpass all previous ones.

The past weeks and particularly days have seen everyone huffing and puffing more and more, the wagon has come to a standstill. Clear thinking is no longer possible. Of all the projects we would have liked to present, two have not been completed. The tiles for the second tile cabinet were warped and the silver-plating of the dish and bowl that we delivered right at the last moment (the vase didn’t work at all) has turned out to be impossible. The problems just keep on coming, and what little communication there is, is not the right kind of communication.

But it is becoming clear exactly what will be going to Basel and it looks like nothing will be missing. After all, ignorance is bliss. Luckily we had already drawn up the plan to present all the work shown in Milan and Basel and the products that I devised for Lensvelt in our own showroom from 9 July. This creates the opportunity to present the products that were not yet complete, which is also exciting.
