20 October 2012 – New Book ‘De Stoel’ and English translation ‘The Site’

20 years of chairs by Piet Hein Eek

After designing chairs for twenty years, an overview has been put together of practically every chair and seating object ever conceived by Piet Hein Eek. The preface states that a good result is determined more by one’s control over the process than goal-setting, and that is exactly what this book is about: years of plodding away, working, creating, changing and thinking in order to ultimately conclude that, of the hundreds of ideas that are sent down the runway, only a few turn out to be successful – but without writing off the lesser gods or denying the enjoyment and exciting suspense of experimentation; on the contrary. There are plenty of pictures to enjoy and, if desired, stories to read as well.

‘The Chair’ book has been published on the occasion of the ZITTEN (TO SIT) chair exhibition, now on display in the Piet Hein Eek gallery. It’s written in Dutch.

THE SITE
Second edition and English translation

Creating to create, without focusing on the future, but on the here and now. This is the story of the purchase, relocation and transformation of our building in Eindhoven. But above all, it is a story about the necessity to have a place where you feel like a fish in the water.

In ‘The Site’, Piet Hein Eek provides a candid report on buying, renovating and moving into the new company building. The second edition has a new cover and is without promotional commentary from leading papers or magazines, since none exist (nor, incidentally, has there been any negative commentary).

A success in spite of a lack of attention. That lack of attention is quite surprising actually, since the book is first and foremost about a business endeavour involving out-of-the-box-thinking and, for the time being, success achieved by a designer during a time of crisis.

Price: € 10,-
