DDW 2014: A lot to see

Paul Heijnen “This work deserves a pedestal”

I advertise for Paul consistently. He is one of the most talented designers I know. We presented his work for years, but now we created a real pedestal where his work can be seen. The stage is bright red, the work is stunning but blue.

Dick van Hoff  “Back on the road”

Rarely do I have to have something. Nevertheless, when I see the designs made by Dick, feelings of craving often emerge. Especially if he makes it himself it is just different. After years of producing in organizations he returned to what he does best: inventing and creating all by himself. “Back on the road again.” In our truck with open trailer in front of our restaurant you cannot pass him without noticing.

“Studio RENS crosses the road”

The designers of Studio Rens caused furore with “Red” and presented their work and themselves in an inimitable way. They will do that in their own atelier across the street, but fortunately also with us, in green.

Social label

Again Social label joined us this DDW. They are currently working with even more designers, artists and materials, and all from the logical notion that you should not forsake people if they can do (a little) less. With designs from Dick van Hoff, Haike Meijer, Roderick Vos and Marc Mulders.

Japan, the Kodomo Cafe and the most beautiful product

Children are running their own Japanese restaurant. If you want to travel, you have to go to Japan. Therefore it is very special when a Japanese architects e-mails you who started a foundation so that children can cook Japanese with each other for other people. So, a little bit of Japan in the Netherlands.

If you would ask I would say that we have the highlight of the DDW, unfortunately not made by me nor another designer. It is Japanese hand-blown glass. Just before the glass is finished, the makers sucks at the glass instead of blows. That creates indentations in the glass. The glasses are super thin, without being weak, none of them is identical and it is a pleasure to hold them and drink from them.

Tonone “To be put to the test”

The lamps of Tonone are exceptional and beautifully designed but also developed further. Rarely or maybe never you will see such a professional product from a small manufacturer. Of course it is about the fun of designing, but it would also be fun if these lamps would sell like crazy. If it was only because they are worth it: they are affordable, beautiful, robust, multi applicable, nicely wrapped and made by a great guy from Den Bosch. We will show a lot of different lamps by Tonone, to make sure that the selling success will not be caused by the convincing presentation.

A tower for Ontour

Remarkable: design students who start a fashion brand, that even turns out to be succesful. This was something we wanted to present justly. Finally we could use our old Meccano structure with orange supports and dirty galvanised shelves that we kept in our storage forever. With this presentation we can show that design is about more than only tables and chairs.
