4 November 2012 – Official Opening Exhibition Roberto Polo’s Choice and Cello Concert Gavriel Lipkind

19-07-2016

After a week of overwhelming interest, high visitor numbers and being nearly overrun by a crowd of design lovers during Dutch Design Week, it is now time to once again focus our attention on activities that are less likely to get the masses beating a path to our door.

Roberto Polo’s Choice

Next Sunday, 4 November 14:30h, we will be celebrating the official opening of the ‘Roberto Polo’s Choice’ exhibition. The exhibition was set up the day before the DDW and has already elicited quite a few oohs and aahs from experts, enthusiasts and people who simply love unusually beautiful objects. The pieces on display are the tip of the iceberg of a phenomenal collection. This collection is chronicled and described in the bulky book The Eye, in which the collected works, including those on display, are placed within an art historical context. In other words, instead of a catalogue based on an exhibition, we’ve created an exhibition based on a book.

It includes pieces by Riemerschmid, Borsani, Breuer, Dulong, Hankar, Hoetger, Hoffman, Hoste, Itten, Mackintosh, Mollino, Moser, Pugin, Rietveld, Serrurier-Bovy, Slutzki, Van de Velde, Van der Meeren, Eemans and Kesting.

In addition to the exhibition, we have decided for the first time to furnish the Van Abbe display case with objects related to the exhibition. This is in keeping with how we would like to use the Van Abbe case. Those who exhibit, perform or curate for us are given the opportunity to select works from the Van Abbe collection (of course, provided the pieces are eligible for this). The goal is to create context and coherence. Roberto is getting the ball rolling, so to speak, as a curator.

Gavriel Lipkind

It’s going to be a day of chart-toppers. In addition to the exceptional works on display in the gallery, a musical performance by first-rate cellist Gavriel Lipkind can be enjoyed at noon. Having Gavriel Lipkind perform at the opening of Roberto Polo is no coincidence, since the first time I heard Gavriel play was at Roberto’s home. The performance left an indelible impression. And wonderful experiences gain in strength when you share them.
