3 September 2011 – Exhibition Atelier van Lieshout

16-06-2016

Several weeks ago I thought that the next phase of the move had begun. My office had to be cleaned and tidied up. It contains an enormous display cabinet in which I can place the results of my passion for collecting. I also have a few drawings and paintings here, mainly old junk, in very fancy plaster baroque frames and an illustration by Joep van Lieshout. Joep gave this to me to mark the occasion of his studio visiting our studio. I wanted to hang the illustrations and paintings on the steel panels in my office. Instead of drilling holes, which is a lot of hassle and not very attractive on the reverse, I had some plates made with hooks. And it once again became clear that the double-sided tape with which the plates were attached to the wall, was not strong enough.

Previous experiences with double-sided tape had already led to historical events, with the result that we were regularly startled by objects falling from the walls. But stubborn as I am, I thought that in this case, with this tape, this surface and these objects, it would hold. When the first frame containing Joep’s illustration fell to the floor and the glass smashed to smithereens I thought that the other frame would hold, but that too was unable to hold its weight. All this resulted in the great malicious pleasure of our entire staff. My authority in this area has now eroded to such an extent that when they hear the phrase ‘hang-up’, they take note of my insights with a smile and leave it at that. The illustration still stands on the floor, glass broken but further undamaged, and the good news is that Atelier van Lieshout is visiting again but now with an amazing exhibition of images and drawings. They didn’t ask me how to hang them up.
