Description

Guido asked me to create an upside-down steel Christmas tree with him. The tree would feature nativity figures made from blown poor man’s silver. He had already purchased a plaster nativity set to have replicas blown in glass. My task was to design and build a tree with mounts to hold the figures. We also attached candle holders to the branches of the tree. The light from the candles reflected beautifully in the silvered Mary, Jesus, and the Wise Men.

Working with Guido has made me acutely aware of the care and dedication that artists bring to their craft, in contrast to our rational, pragmatic, problem-solving approach. A designer is inherently more service-oriented than an artist. Even though I create objects using a method somewhat similar to Guido’s, there is still a clear difference in approach. This difference is primarily marked by the emphasis placed on efficiency. For us, efficiency is indispensable, while for Guido and many other artists, it often takes a back seat.
