Decor Youp van ‘t Hek

14-04-2016

Youp called me a while ago to ask if I would design the decor for his new theatre piece ‘De Schreeuwstorm’. It was the second time that I had designed a theatre decor; I have previously made designs for Johan Simons of Het Zuidelijk Toneel. These were objectives, but now it was a whole decor.

My first meeting with Youp was primarily intended to see if we could see eye to eye. Shortly afterwards Youp called me to say that the chitchat was over and it was time we got started. After talking about the content of the piece, and all kinds of related things, I visited a try-out and devised a concept and made some drawings.

We then got started and it all turned out to be a little more complicated than we originally thought. Once finished, it was different than Youp had expected. What’s great is that it did not lead to panic and that we, using the original starting points, quickly came to the conclusion that just a few alterations were needed to achieve the intended image.

With the problems that arose, Youp, his impresario Hans and actually the whole team were constructive, attentive and helped to search for the right solution. As such, everything was greatly improved. Stephan, who executed the project for us, succeeded in bringing everything to a good conclusion with his enormous effort, dedication and quality.

We can only post the decor itself on the website once the performances are finished, so that means getting hold of “sold-out tickets”. It goes without saying that the show is much better than the decor.
