Once again I started writing a piece about a series of setbacks that ultimately turned out to be blessings in disguise. But even I have had enough by now of parading the fact that everything always goes wrong. This year we are presenting in the shop on the top floor at Rossana’s, who has hopefully had a major clear-up. We never really know what will be waiting for us when we arrive in Milan, but it always feels like coming home. It’s quite possibly the ideal location for the presentation this year, because this time, instead of showing a large number of big monumental objects, we’re presenting a lot of small products. In part these are the products that we have developed for our own collection, but we will also be showing a number of products that I designed for other brands: spectacles for EyeWear, clocks and watches for LEFF Amsterdam, printed stools and – literally hot off the press – Black Bricks Wallpaper and Burnt Wood Wallpaper for NLXL.

So as not to alienate the fans of monumental work completely, we have made a RAG table from the pipes that we salvaged from the RAG building. This building is the first, and nearly completed, heroic achievement of the Architectuur BV company set up with Iggie Dekkers.  The building will be delivered this summer. Characteristic of this redevelopment is that the existing material – the building, that is – was used as the basis for creating something new. That may sound logical, but in times when logic and doing the obvious are not normal, it stands out from the crowd. For nearly 30 years, throwing nothing away and making do with what you’ve got has been the guiding principle of “Piet Hein Eek”. Therefore, the latest cabinets made from one single sheet (the Single Sheet Cabinets) had to be part of the presentation for the Salone. And in order to take the crusade against throwing things away to extremes, we are bringing a Waste Bust with us. A sculpture made from garbage – not made from leftover junk, as we often do, but from real rubbish. Wouldn’t it be fantastic if these sculptures ended up being high valued? That would be the greatest example of added value ever: from rubbish to art!
