The photos themselves are almost works of art. I’ll soon be going to Amsterdam to give a talk on the occasion of the opening of his exhibition in the Ornis A gallery. When I saw the work that will hang there, I felt slightly disappointed as I would rather have had his exhibition here with us. But much stronger was the feeling that it’s all exactly right and logical. As early as the 1970s, Thomas took photographs without formal composition. He leaves the situation just as it is when he encounters it. I think that after a long period of prosperity, followed by crisis and reflection, in which people had to resign themselves to being mere extras in a pre-designed environment, we have reached a period in which we’re less attached to the idea of a perfect picture and more interested in seeking the personal touch. I’ve always attempted – with varying levels of success of course – to create objects and spaces which make people feel good more than anything else, rather than something that looks great in a photo. And that is exactly what or how Thomas has always photographed, as can be seen in this exhibition. He doesn’t move things around, manipulate or alter them, but instead he looks closely and chooses the perspective that captures the essence of the subject. The exhibition is called “Wohnportraits” (Home portraits) and mainly comprises photographs of interiors. And yet they’re portraits. In the same way as he portrays my work.

Cauty/Mauviel

Photograph: Thomas Mayer

In order to meet the need for people to have more opportunity to visit the gallery, showroom and shop, we recently started opening on Thursday evenings, Friday evenings and Sunday afternoons as well. The most recent addition is that of the pans and products of Mauviel. Now, I would ask myself: “Who’s going to pay so much attention to a set of pans?” But that’s perhaps another reason to come and have a look, as the pans all in a row almost form an exhibition.

RAG

Photograph: Thomas Mayer

Perhaps the most daring project for us at the moment is the redevelopment of the RAG building on our site. The most significant factor in Eek's career has been the creation of a world that embodies the entire process, from idea to consumer. This has proved to be an exceptional way of producing since it is quite rare to both design and produce furniture 'under the same roof' in countries with high labour costs. Each product is designed with a focus on the material, techniques and craftsmanship required to make it. In 2010, Piet Hein Eek moved his company from Geldrop to a former Philips factory in Eindhoven. The most important part of the company is the production facility (wood, metal, ceramics upholstery and cartonnage) which is located in the heart of the building. The transparency of the building gives visitors insight into the whole production process. The concept of offering a total experience starts with the showroom and the production processes but also includes a restaurant, an art gallery, rented studios, a chip shop, a hairdresser and from October 2020 there will also be a hotel. Eek has worked together with architect Iggie Dekkers since 2015, designing a range of houses and undertaking architectural redevelopments and other construction projects. Eek has created his own world which has developed into an important cultural hub in the city of Eindhoven; a dynamic centre where creativity, production and sales go hand in hand.
@id":"https://pietheineek.nl/actueel/thomas-mayer-james-cauty-mauviel-rag-en-jochen-otten#breadcrumb
en-US
@type":"ReadAction
https://pietheineek.nl/actueel/thomas-mayer-james-cauty-mauviel-rag-en-jochen-otten"]}]},{"@type":"ImageObject
en-US","@id":"https://pietheineek.nl/actueel/thomas-mayer-james-cauty-mauviel-rag-en-jochen-otten#primaryimage
{"@type":"BreadcrumbList","@id":"https://pietheineek.nl/actueel/thomas-mayer-james-cauty-mauviel-rag-en-jochen-otten#breadcrumb
@type":"ListItem
{"@type":"ListItem
Thomas Mayer, James Cauty, Mauviel, RAG and Jochen Otten"}]},{"@type":"WebSite","@id":"https://pietheineek.nl/#website
{"@id":"https://pietheineek.nl/#organization
@type":"SearchAction
@type":"EntryPoint
https://pietheineek.nl/?s={search_term_string}
@type":"PropertyValueSpecification
{"@type":"Organization","@id":"https://pietheineek.nl/#organization
{"@type":"ImageObject
en-US","@id":"https://pietheineek.nl/#/schema/logo/image/
{"@id":"https://pietheineek.nl/#/schema/logo/image/
https://www.facebook.com/PietHeinEek/","https://x.com/pietheineek","https://www.instagram.com/piet_hein_eek/","https://nl.pinterest.com/pietheineek/"]},{"@type":"Person","@id":"https://pietheineek.nl/#/schema/person/6c54776f54ab527a3ffd03f27f5e82c0
Pim
@type":"ImageObject
en-US","@id":"https://secure.gravatar.com/avatar/57b1041592b59b0369788153498ad254f2b8766a7b6338d2de49e7a9057c03dd?s=96&d=mm&r=g
https://secure.gravatar.com/avatar/57b1041592b59b0369788153498ad254f2b8766a7b6338d2de49e7a9057c03dd?s=96&d=mm&r=g
https://secure.gravatar.com/avatar/57b1041592b59b0369788153498ad254f2b8766a7b6338d2de49e7a9057c03dd?s=96&d=mm&r=g
Pim
http://www.pietheineek.nl
["Current
Current
["GET
