Opening: Exhibition Space / Menno Doornbos

Fortunately we realised that it would be pointless to launch an actual exhibition during the opening of the building. We had originally planned to start in December with the first ‘real’ exhibition, but ended up postponing it. The new target date is January, which gives us more time to fully prepare the space. Guido Geelen will break the ice with an exhibition of lovely new pieces. At the same time, we want to put together an exhibition on the first floor that will give a foretaste of what’s to come.

It’s a rather ambitious plan. We need to mobilise as many of those we will be working with early on, which is quite a challenge, even though we started a while ago. The best part is that we get to have artists visiting us to see whether their work would be appropriate to show here. The entire concept is totally at odds with how this is normally done. The exhibition space is part of a much larger ambition. We plan to put together genuinely classic exhibitions. The art will be merged with other activities in the building. Hopefully the result will be an exciting experience for all.

All the same, there was plenty to look at during the opening, a sort of combination of unusual objects without any coherent presentation, but lots and lots of beautiful pieces. You really got the sense in the building that the blend of different disciplines, such as design, products, art, food and much more, came about naturally, but also with a feeling of suspense. We are now elaborating on this feeling.
