The elegant waltzes of Johann Strauss\, icons of the Viennese musical tradition\, are presented here in surprising chamber music arrangements by composers from the circle of the Second Viennese School\, such as Arnold Schönberg and Alban Berg. These interpretations give the familiar Viennese dance music a new\, transparent\, and at times playful sound. \nIn addition\, the program features music by composers who shaped Vienna’s cultural life around 1900. The suite by Erich Wolfgang Korngold and the atmospheric Der Wind by Franz Schreker reflect the rich\, late-Romantic sound world of Viennese modernism. The charming miniature Schön Rosmarin by Fritz Kreisler adds a touch of Viennese salon style. \nTogether\, these works paint a musical portrait of Vienna at the turn of the century: a city where waltz\, salon music\, and innovative art music coexisted and inspired one another.

DESCRIPTION:© Willemieke Frank \nAn evening dedicated to Scandinavian music\, focusing on the beauty and power of Norwegian\, Swedish and Finnish composers. This program brings music steeped in the love of the homeland and the unmistakable landscape of the North. \nThe concert opens with Edvard Grieg’s Violin Sonata\, performed by Veriko Tchumburidze and Liebrecht Vanbeckevoort. Grieg\, one of Norway’s greatest composers\, interweaves his national identity with European romantic traditions in this work. The sonata is rich in lyrical melodies\, reflecting Norwegian nature and folk elements. Next will be White Flags by Icelandic composer Daníel Bjarnason\, performed by the Storioni Trio. \nSibelius\, one of the most important Finnish composers\, is also represented. Raindrops (Marc and Wouter Vossen) captures the essence of Finnish nature\, with a subtle and poetic expression of the rain falling over the Finnish landscape. In addition\, Janne Valkeajoki plays the arranged version of Sibelius’ Valse triste\, one of the most beautiful expressions of melancholy in Scandinavian music. \nThe program will conclude with Franz Berwald’s monumental Grand Septet in B flat major\, opus 21. This work is a blend of classical influences and typical romantic drama. The performance by a large ensemble featuring Elaine Clark (violin)\, Nil Kocamangil (cello)\, Hervé Joulain (horn)\, Bram van de Roer (double bass)\, Andreas Langenbuch (clarinet) and the rest of the Storioni Trio offers a powerful conclusion to the evening\, in which the Scandinavian soul emerges in all its greatness. \nThis special evening will be held in the unique setting of the Piet Hein Eek Workshop. DESCRIPTION:We close the Storioni Festival at Piet Hein Eek in the evening with a final concert in the workshop. This concert is based on Picasso and Parisian musicians of his time. \n“The late evening concert begins with music from Igor Stravinsky’s neo-classical ballet Pulcinella\, a beautiful blend of graceful melodies by Pergolesi mixed with Stravinsky’s spicy flavour. Followed by songs by Paul Dessau\, a composer who is far too rarely heard. He emigrated to the US because of the Nazi regime\, but later became one of the GDR’s most important composers\, alongside Kurt Weill. Then one of those wonderful world-famous piano pieces by the French satirist Érik Satie\, Gymnopédies\, which would evoke visions of naked boy dancers in silhouettes on a Greek vase. Next\, a sad tribute to a deceased singer by Francis Poulenc\, his Élégie\, moving in its simplicity\, and full of hope and resignation. DESCRIPTION:The Storioni Festival continues in the evening in our workshop. With Piet & Picasso in Spain\, the Storioni Festival is set in Spanish atmospheres. \n“The concert opens with the famous 1914 Siete Canciones populares españolas (Seven Spanish Folk Songs) by Spanish composer Manuel de Falla. He described the consideration that guided him in composing as follows: ‘In my humble opinion\, in a folk song\, the spirit is more important than the letter. Rhythm\, key and melodic intervals are the main thing. The people confirm this by constantly varying the melodic line.’ Following this was one of the favourite encores among cellists\, Requiebros by the great Spanish cellist Gaspar Cassadó and dedicated to his famous fellow cellist Pablo Casals. The Spanish title means as much as ‘compliments’. Echoes of Andalusian gypsy music and flamenco guitar music resound in Joaquín Turina’s beautiful Piano Quartet. The originally Catalan song El Cant dels Ocells (The Song of the Birds) was adapted for cello by Pablo Casals. In protest against the Franco regime\, he opened every concert with this moving song. Today you will hear this ‘song of the birds’ in a special arrangement for piano trio and overtone singer! The concert closes with parts from Manuel de Falla’s El amor brujo (Love and Witchcraft)\, a macabre love story of a gypsy girl.” \nAfter this concert\, the ‘Storioni Café’ will take place in our Grand Café.
