Sunday Marc Ruygrok Day

The funny thing about our news is that when there is a lot of it, we’re too busy to report it. But this time we’re making an exception to the rule and, despite the hugely busy time that we’re experiencing, I’m writing a piece about a future event: tomorrow is the opening of Marc Ruygrok’s OH OH OH HO HO HO exhibition. We have in fact only been active as a gallery for four-and-a-half years and we realised from the start that it’s good to work regularly with artists and to represent them. But we had not yet got round to putting on a second exhibition with the same artist, although that actually makes a lot of sense. For a year now, work by practically all the artists who have been featured here is on display in the Wonderkamer (Wonder Chamber), so that their works are permanently on show.

Something else that we quickly realised is that we often make a real contribution to works that are created, or we even make the work in its entirety for the artist. We now believe this is almost the most important thing of all: that the work that is created with us and at our place should be inextricably linked to the artist, the location and our business. You could say that that is our business model. Instead of focussing on art fairs where you take your product to the customer, it seems more obvious to us that we should attract the customers to our building and to the art. This is of course not set in stone, because, who knows, we’ll probably go to an art fair again one day. But the same principle applies to the art as applies to all our other activities – we start with what is there and make use of the possibilities that are available. In this case there is the artist’s idea, the workplace where we can make it and the gallery where we can display it. In this exhibition it is not only the work that is important, but also in particular the way in which it came into being. Marc’s ideas are given shape in an almost sketchy fashion, precisely to demonstrate the possibilities and the special nature of the collaboration. Creating in this way is a celebration, of which we would like you to be a part.
