2008 Graduation Show Presentation
For the past few years I’ve found myself being surprised about the differences today with my study years. Back then, good quality was something that was random, almost accidental. Many of the final exams were clearly substandard, whereas, today, it seems as if almost every student has learned the right skills. Much of this forward progress has taken place during the past decade under the wings of Lidewei Edelkoort.
Lidewij’s request to work together with Petra Jansen (of Studio Boot) in putting together her final exhibition as Director of the academy was an honour, a challenge and a gratifying experience. The concept was simple: a combination of work and school! The result: everything in grey and in a row, with plenty of room for the multitude of projects, students, ideas and accompanying chaos and the hope that it would not be readily apparent how much this all involved. Once again, the work done by the students this year is both surprising and fantastic, and fulfils the leading role we had in mind.
Cup
During a conversation, Petra, who works as an instructor at the academy and therefore knows everyone (which is almost a prerequisite to completing an assignment like this), came up with the brilliant idea to draw attention to the René Smeets and Melkweg awards. It was up to me to come up with a suitable prize. So I decided that the prize should be a cup with large handles to emphasise the importance of the awards and, of course, to make a good picture. Since both awards are equally as important, we made a two-sided cup.
Amazingly enough, the cups turned out all right, considering the fact that they’re made the same way as our ceramic jugs, namely by putting together flat pieces of clay and supporting them with all variety of constructions. But, in the end, they turned out perfectly!!!
