It was announced yesterday that the DDW cannot go ahead this year. It is the next in a series of disappointments we have to deal with. I often describe the Dutch Design Week as the only true design week because it comes from a background of creativity instead of a commercial trade fair or theme. The DNA of the DDW is the creativity in the city of Eindhoven, the schools, the students, the workshops and studios. This creativity has not suddenly disappeared; Dutch Design is still here in Eindhoven. Not just for one week, but always.
Instead of the unbelievable number of people we would normally welcome in one week, and that make it almost too busy to have a good look around and soak up all the information, our presentation will be on display for two whole months this year. It will be less busy, but certainly not less fun. Within the possibilities available to us, we will create a fantastic presentation together with the workshops, studios and designers and wish you a warm and safe welcome!
Of course (for us, at least), two weeks before the event, we are frantically busy with the preparations for the DDW that is not taking place. The showroom is all over the place and just a few products are finished. But on 17 October it will be ready and beautiful.
Luckily, the hotel is not ready on time, and we have been spared the disappointment of a last-minute rush to finish everything, only to have to turn guests away as a result of the new social distancing measures. It will still require a huge effort to get it finished, but the result will be beautiful! An addition to our wonderful, non-virtual world in which the workshop is the beating heart where all our products are made, surrounded by the showroom, shop, gallery, studios and the restaurant.
The hotel itself will make an emphatic mark upon our presentation this year. It will stimulate a new dynamic within our own world as total concept and give our guests a completely unique experience. As well as the designs for the collection, we have also made a series of designs especially for the hotel that will make their mark on our collection as a whole.
Based on plans and reactions from colleagues and other stakeholders over the coming week, we will decide exactly what you will be able to see and experience here in Eindhoven in months to come.
